Australian Domestic Leagues Hit By COVID-19 Outbreak

Men’s and Women’s domestic cricket leagues in Australia have been hit hard by the Covid-19 outbreaks inside bio-bubbles which has forced Cricket Australia (CA) to make late changes in the schedule.

Due to the border closures after the increase in Covid-19 cases, two games of the Women’s National Cricket League involving Western Australia (WA) were postponed till March and with this, the women’s domestic 50-over final has been pushed to mid-March.

The games of Western Australia against Tasmania which was set to be held in Hobart on January 7 and January 9 will now take place on March 9 and March 11.

The Covid-19 has also hit the marquee Big Bash League (BBL) and Cricket Australia (CA) have a big task in front to complete the season and maintain the safety of all the players and staff. According to the reports of ‘Australian Associated Press,’ the decision regarding the future of BBL 2021-22 might be taken on Tuesday, and all the eight teams could be based in Melbourne to limit travel.

So far 12 players from Melbourne Stars have been found COVID-19 positive, and they have been forced to call up Victorian club cricketers to field a team. Also, Melbourne Stars players Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa and Nathan Coulter-Nile were already in isolation due to COVID-19. Other than Melbourne Stars, the players of Sydney Thunder, Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat have also contracted the virus.

The Covid-19 outbreak has forced Cricket Australia to make changes in the schedule of the games which were scheduled to take place at Gold Coast.

CA stated that some members of the Brisbane Heat camp were tested positive for Covid-19, as a result, their tonight’s game against the Sydney Sixers at Metricon Stadium has been cancelled and the Perth Scorchers will now face Sydney Sixers. The order of this week’s games has been shuffled as the Brisbane Heat await the results of PCR tests.

Australia all-rounder Hilton Cartwright who plays for Melbourne Stars said that he has never felt more vulnerable to a virus in his life.

“I’ve never felt more vulnerable to a virus in my entire life and I never realised how much it was going to affect my mental state,” Cartwright was quoted as saying by ‘cricket.com.au’.

“I’ve had form slumps and this ranks right up there with how I actually feel about going about my business day-to-day. Myself and my wife have basically been locked up in our room, not sure if we’re capable of catching the lift in case someone in there might have caught (COVID-19).”

He added that the Covid-19 doesn’t allow players to focus on the match and it’s always in players’ minds.

“Constantly, it’s on your mind and then you’ve got to walk out there and perform one of the biggest pressure stages in the world. My mental state wasn’t in a great place about coming to your workplace and COVID is basically running rampant,” he said.
