Chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma has opened on the ODI captaincy matter in Indian cricket and said that everyone in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) requested Virat Kohli not to quit the T20 captaincy before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.
Rohit Sharma was appointed as India’s new ODI skipper after Virat Kohli decided to quit the T20I captaincy as the BCCI selectors didn’t want to have two white-ball captains in the team. So, they decided to give the entire white-ball leadership responsibility to Rohit Sharma.
Meanwhile, Chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma has said that everyone in the BCCI asked Kohli to continue as a skipper in T20I ” for the sake of Indian cricket” but he didn’t agree. He said:
“When Virat informed us that he is quitting T20 captaincy, everyone asked Virat, for the sake of Indian cricket, to please continue as T20 captain. Everyone asked him to continue.”
Sharma added that all the selectors told Kohli that his captaincy quitting announcement could affect India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 campaign and asked him to discuss this matter after the World Cup. He said:
“All selectors felt that leaving captaincy will have an effect on the World Cup campaign. We all told Virat Kohli that this could be discussed after the World Cup.”
I Wasn’t Told Not To Relinquish The T20 Captaincy – Virat Kohli
Meanwhile, the latest statement by Chetan Sharma contradicts what Virat Kohli had said in an explosive press conference before the South Africa departure. Notably, Kohli said that his captaincy relinquishing decision was welcomed by the BCCI and he wasn’t told to reconsider his decision and it was taken as a progressive step in the right direction. Virat Kohli had said:
“Before quitting the T20I captaincy, I had approached the BCCI and explained the reasons behind my decision. That was received very well. There was no offence or hesitation. Mujhe yeh nahin kaha gaya tha ki aap T20 captaincy na chodiye (I wasn’t told not to relinquish the T20 captaincy). Rather, it was taken as a progressive step, in the right direction. I communicated at that time that I would like to continue as Test and ODI captain unless the office-bearers and the selectors felt that I shouldn’t carry on with this responsibility. My communication (to the BCCI) was clear.”
