Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra showered praise on senior Indian speedster Mohammed Shami and said that he is “a top-class bowler” whenever he is fit.
India won the first Test match of the three-match Test series against South Africa in a dominating manner by 113 runs at the SuperSport Park, Centurion on Thursday, December 30. Shami was the star performer for India in the match as he bagged a 5-wicket haul in the first innings and a 3-wicket haul in the second innings.
Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra said that Shami bowled tighter lines than Jasprit Bumrah, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi in the match.
“If you talk about his bowling, his story is pretty simple. His story finishes and starts at fitness. If he is fit, he is a top-class bowler, We praise Bumrah, we saw Ngidi and Rabada taking four wickets in the second innings but no one has bowled tighter lines than him.
“If you bowl at the same line, you can take wickets. He’s asking questions, it’s only a matter and time and that makes him different from everyone else,” he said.
There’s a Little Bit Of Glenn McGrath In Mohammed Shami’s Bowling – Aakash Chopra
Cricketer-turned-commentator further compared Shami’s skills to the Australian fast bowling legend Glenn McGrath.
“He’s consistently bowling well. You say ‘Bumrah produces magic’; yes, he produces magic and it shows. What Shami does isn’t magic; he just bowls the same line and takes the wicket. There’s a little bit of Glenn McGrath in his bowling in that he bowls in the same lines consistently and with discipline,” he added.
Also, during the Centurion Test Speedster Mohammed Shami became the only 5th fast bowler from India to pick 200 Test wickets.
