Afghanistan and Sri Lanka go head to head on match 1 of Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 in Sharjah on September 3, Saturday. This is the final game to be played at this venue. Afghanistan became the first team from group B to qualify for the next round. Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by two wickets to qualify for the next stage.
Sri Lanka led by Dasun Shanaka chased down a record total of 184 to win the game and advance through to the next stage of the tournament. Kusal Mendis scored 60 off 37. However, it was Ashanaka’s 45 off 33 balls in the middle-order and Asitha Fernando’s 10 off 3 balls that sealed the game for Sri Lanka.

Shanaka was an ecstatic skipper after the game. There were some war of words between the two teams ahead of the start of the game and the Lankans has the last laugh.
“I think the openers did a good job, we discussed that we needed that opening partnership for the start. Today, that was the key and that’s why we chased down this total. I thought of promoting myself, but from the team’s point I have to sacrifice to come down and play as a finisher. My first priority is for the team. I think Chamika’s run out, we thought the game was gone. But Asitha Fernando scored those two shots very well, these guys have so much potential. It is lovely to see” he said on Sri Lanka’s win.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan lamented on Mahedi Hasan’s front foot no-ball which cost them the game in the final over. Shakib said that his side failed to handle the pressure in the final over and that a spinner bowling a no-ball is a crime.
“No captain wants a no ball and a spinner bowling a no ball is a crime. We bowled a lot of no balls and wide balls and that is not disciplined bowling. These are pressure games and we need to learn a lot from here and move forward,” Shakib al Hasan told reporters on Thursday.
